You may think that rubbing shoulders with super models and the top members of the fashion elite day in and day out would sound like the dream job of a lifetime. But there is a whole lot more to it than just taking pictures and socializing.

The obvious skill for a successful fashion photography career is to be able to take high quality photos. It takes a lot of technical knowledge and experience to be able to do this. You must be well versed in the fundamentals of photography like lighting, distance, and perspective. On top of this knowledge, a career in fashion photography demands a high level of creativity so you can constantly bring fresh, new ideas. Generally in fashion photography, the more avant-garde, the better.

Many jobs in fashion photography will require you to be able to use editing software as well. Strong computer savvy is important for this reason. In addition, being familiar with the latest trends, fashions, and designers as well as having a good background in the history of fashion is essential.  A lack of in-depth knowledge and enthusiasm will show through in any photographer’s work.

A Day In The Life

A high degree of flexibility and an adventurous spirit are required in a fashion photography career. You will either be in a studio for hours on end or traveling to various exotic locations to do your photo shoots. A lot of your time will be spent interacting with models and staff so good interpersonal skills are an absolute must.

A fashion photography career may sound like a dream but it is also hard work.  A strong educational background as well as an extreme amount of talent is necessary in order to make it in the field of fashion photography.

If you’ve been thinking about embarking on a fashion photography career you will need to pay your dues to get to the top. Whether that means studying photography at a university or getting out and beating the bushes and networking it will take time for you to get where you eventually want to be. It is a tough field to break into, but if you persevere, are extremely hard working, and have a huge amount of raw talent you will find yourself with a successful career in fashion photography.
